It was not until the mid-twentieth century that Cordoba recovered part of its former splendour and importance. The growing population and economy, together with the establishment of the university, enriched the city artistically and culturally. The historic quarter of Cordoba was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1994.
