Poland 2016

In 2016, a city in Poland will share with a Spanish city the designation of European Capital of Culture, according to the schedule set by the European Commission.

As established by the European Commission, the candidate cities of both states must demonstrate that they know the cultural context of the countries with which they share the designation and that they can establish cultural relations with them.

For Cordoba, it is important to strengthen their ties with cities in Poland which aspire to be European Cultural Capital in 2016. To achieve this, good relations and exchanges of agents and cultural activities between the Spanish and Polish candidates will be valued positively by the panel of experts when evaluating the different candidates.

The Polish cities which have so far expressed interest in presenting their candidature as European Cultural Capital are: Gdansk, Lublin, Lodz, Poznan, Torun, Szczecin, Wroclaw, Warsaw, Katowice and Bialystok. Spain and Poland have a very close spiritual tradition in common, centred around the Catholic religion, as well as the fact that they have both experienced a peaceful transition to democracy and are free from any threat of civil or military confrontation.
